Tony Knowles Coastal Trail 11.0 miles
(Anchorage)
This paved trail begins on 2nd Avenue five blocks from Downtown Bicycle Rental. Past Earthquake Park there are nice views of downtown Anchorage, Knik Arm and Mount Susitna. Mount McKinley can be seen on clear days. Most people encounter moose past the airport. The trail ends at Kincaid Park where there is excellent mountain biking.
Wolverine Peak 5.5 miles

Seward Hwy. south, exit O'Malley, east on O'Malley Rd, Right turn on Upper O'Malley Rd, then left on Prospect Dr, until Prospect Heights parking area on the right side. Trail head at the end of parking. Also accessible using Flattop Mountain Shuttle going to Glen Alps trailhead. Strenuous hiking trail well developed for the first 2 miles. Great view of the Campbell Creek Valley and Chugach State Park. Moose are common. Great berry picking in late July and August. Hiking through tall wet grass along the trail in August is common, so dress accordingly.
Powerline trail: 11.0 miles

Use Flattop Mountain Shuttle. Trail head begins at the Glenn Alps entrance, same as Flattop. Moderate hike with 1,400 feet elevation gain. This trail provides easy hiking access to the Indian Creek Valley and beautiful high mountains covered with wildflowers. Some wildlife sightseeing available along the trail; wet and muddy in early summer. Snow machines use the lower part of the trail in winter. Moose, many sheep and a few goats. Very popular for Anchorage berry picking. Runners often outnumber hikers. Bring binoculars to see wildlife on distant slopes.
Ship Pass 9.0 miles

Trail head begins at the Glenn Alps entrance, same as Flattop. Please use Flattop Mountain Shuttle's great service. Moderate hike with 1,800 feet elevation gain. There is access to Ship Creek trail. Spectacular views of the Chugach Mountains and Ship Lake once you are above the brush. Berry picking is good all along the way in season and in mid-summer lots of wildflowers can be observed. This is the best way to get to The Wedge and The Ramp. Not many people on this trail, which makes is wonderful. To have more time to explore, rent a mountain bike from Downtown Bike Rentals and put it on the Flattop Mountain Shuttle. Bike two miles up the valley (easy trail) and stash your bikes in the brush. Then ford the creek to start your adventure.
Williwaw Lakes 6.0 miles
Same trail as Ship Lake Pass. Use Flattop Mountain Shuttle, but don't bother renting a mountain bike, because the trails you'll be using are not suitable for this. Moderate hike with lots of other small trails along the way and with 1,300 feet elevation gain. First lake at 5 mile and second lake at mile 6. Possible in one day. Dall sheep very common and high mountain scenes. If you don't want to go to the lakes, climb to the Ballpark and cross it for a bird's eye view. Excellent view, but steep hiking to get to the Ballpark. Well worth the effort, and once you are in the Ballpark, it is very easy hiking--no brush.
Hidden Lake 4.5 miles

Trail head same as Ship Lake Pass; stay on the left for Hidden Lake trail. Moderate hike. Best to take a mounain bike for the first two miles to save time. Rent one from Downtown Bicycle Rentals and put it on the Flattop Mountain Shuttle.
Rover's Run 2.5 miles

Trail head on Campbell Airstrip Road, off Tudor Road, in east Anchorage. Easy hike on well maintained trail. 6 miles long for the loop. Nice creek in middle of Anchorage with salmon runs. Mountain bikes allowed. You can bike down to this trail from Flattop. Rent a mountain bike from Downtown Bicycle Rentals in Anchorage. Pete will give you a ride in the shuttle and you can ride back to town.
Rabbit Lake 5.6 miles

Trail head at the Chugach State Park Boundary, off Lower Canyon Road, in south Anchorage from DeArmound road. Moderate hike with 1,200 feet elevation gain. Nice view of the mountain lake and panoramic view from the top of Turnagain Arm. The trail is use for cross-country skiing in winter. Can also access this from Flattop. However, don't expect to make it back before the Flattop Mountain Shuttle leaves. You can hike to Rabbit Lake and camp. GREAT rainbow trout fishing. Many dall sheep.
